DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

The Good Mother is a psychological horror rooted in the love, resilience, and sacrifice of immigrant mothers. Inspired by the strength of my own mother, The Good Mother explores how the responsibility to be a good mother can become psychologically overwhelming, particularly when love becomes entangled with fear, guilt, and the impossible expectation of keeping one’s children safe from every danger.

For Daniela, the fear of failing her children is not new. Beneath her growing anxiety lies a guilt she has never been able to overcome. As the world around her becomes increasingly uncertain, her desperate need to protect her children becomes inseparable from her need to prove that she is a good mother.

Set against the backdrop of a pandemic, the film also examines how economic insecurity and systemic inequalities leave vulnerable families with impossible choices. Though the story descends into darkness, it is ultimately about a woman desperately trying to protect her children in a world she feels she cannot control.

It’s a horror story, but also a love story born from reverence for the women who carry the weight of survival on their shoulders. And it asks, what happens when those women are pushed to the edge by systems that were never built to support them?
